Summary:
With the objective of addressing the high level of unemployment among women and youth of Maldives, the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture (MoFA) and UNDP Maldives signed a project ‘Support to Integrated Farming’. This project was aimed at addressing the unemployment issue through strengthening the sustainability of agricultural activities particularly focusing on establishment of extension services on selected islands.
It was recognized that in order to realize the long term success and sustainability of the activities implemented, a coherent institutional arrangement for farming activities needed to be built with the capacity to manage activities in a professional manner. This would require the entrepreneurs to acquire business management skills, organizational development planning, marketing and entrepreneurial skills for organizations undertaking the farming activities. To this end, MoFA and UNDP wished to develop and conduct training programmes to improve these skill sets of the Farmers.
FJS Consulting designed a 9 module business skills training programme and conducted the program at selected islands across the Maldives:
